My husband and I are taking a two week road trip from Seattle to either San Francisco or San Diego, depending on how much there is to see.

What are the "must sees" for Portland and Oregon state?

We're thinking of flying with a tent so we can camp on occasion.

I'd love to hear your ideas!

Crater Lake. It is a bit of a detour, but you must see the unique Blue color.

BTW, when do you plan to leave? Crater Lake roads generally open only after Summer begins.

Thanks, SMUR! This is exactly the info I'm hoping to find!

If there are a lot of "must sees' via detour, we'll save southern California part for another trip.

We were planning to leave May 25 through June 9th. But we could probably change it to June 1st to June 15th.

Is it possible the roads will be open by May 28th or 29th? If not, will they be open the first week of June?

Or do you literally mean when Summer begins, as in June 20th-ish?

I believe they go by snow accumulation rather than seasons. See Current Conditions - Crater Lake National Park

Here are two more of Crater Lake:
APOD: 2012 April 25 - Meteor Over Crater Lake
APOD: 2012 July 25 - Pink Aurora Over Crater Lake

Move your cursor over both pictures for extra thrills.

Even though Crater Lake is beautiful, if I had to choose between Crater Lake and driving the length of the Oregon Coast, I would choose the Oregon Coast.

Kadylady and karlsch, thanks for the great pictures. They make me want to start driving toward the lake right now.
