If you've ever wondered how much kWh of power a certain plug-in item is using, Multnomah County Library has quite a few meters for check-out. The Kill-a-watt meter can measure wattage as well as the cumulative kWh.

Kill A Watt Monitors
It looks like they're pretty popular as most of them are currently checked out.

Something to consider.
If you want one to keep, it's like $30 at Home Depot or Lowe's.

These are highly useful. I bought mine when it was nearly double the price now. I calculated that it paid for itself within a year. The next step is to purchase automatic off switches for the kitchen lights. Certain members of my family have a tendency to leave them on for hours at a time despite repeated stern talks.

If you have, or get, a web-connected home energy monitor you can sign up for PlotWatt.com and learn a lot more about your home energy use, including ways to save money and energy. It's a cool system. And free.

Thank you for this information. I never knew this existed. My neighbor and I just got our electric bills raised through the roof. It seems the antiquated meters that were replaced by new ones were not reading correctly. This device could be useful in our attempts to lower the new bills.
