My husband and I (and our cat) are moving to Portland from the Corvallis area at the end of August. He will be working in the Lloyd district and I will probably not be working; we have one car.

Any advice on where to live? We are OK with living in an apartment but would prefer a townhouse, duplex, or small house. Our budget is about $950/month (up to $1100 if significant utilities are included) and we need at least 2 bedrooms. We can deal with 1 bathroom but would prefer at least 1.5.

My husband will be taking the bus or MAX to work and it is really important that we live very close to a MAX station or a bus stop that will take him directly near his office without transferring. Even better if we could live close to his office. He has some physical challenges and walking more than about 3 blocks on either end would not work for him.

We would like to live somewhere relatively safe, walkable/bikeable (for me). I am pregnant so we are not interested in the bar scene but would love to be near other 20s/30s couples (I am 30, he is 32) and cultural opportunities. We are liberal minded and would live to be near the same but the more logistical criteria is much more important to us.

Any suggestions are much appreciated. We will have a few days here and there to scout the area but I figure we shouldn't start looking seriously until the end of July/beginning of August. Would love advice on the neighborhoods to live but also specific developments/apartment complexes/etc to check into or stay away from. Thanks!

This area would be great for you. And your husband may even be able to walk to work.

Guide to Sullivans Gulch Neighborhood in Portland Oregon

There is also downtown and the Pearl District if you want to be more centrally located and near buses and MAX.

You should try to secure a rental ASAP wherever neighborhood you want to move to. Rentals are difficult to come by in these times. If you plan to move at the end of August, I would advise you begin looking now.

I am not familiar with individual rentals in that area but maybe someone on the forum will be.

There is a MAX stop within a block of the Lloyd Center. Any housing convenient to the MAX would work from a transportation standpoint. There are apartments in the vicinity, north of Broadway, where you would be within walking distance.
