There isn't enough info in the article, but I can tell you as the mother of a soldier who has been present at some military funerals where these jackels frequent, that the group's MO is to incite violence in the mourners, then sue for damages. This is how they finance their effort, so I suspect this is what happened in this case.

If you mean they "incite" violence by exercising their free speech rights, you're correct. But, that hasn't been the case when I've seen them at funerals. They do what they do and someone takes offense. THAT'S where the violence starts. I've seen them more than once and have never seen them start an altercation.
I'm not defending their message. I think it's deplorable and reprehensible and my first impluse has been to smash one of those signs over their stupid heads but, on reflection, the issue of free speech usually doesn't pertain to things we want or like to hear. It's about what we DON'T like or what to hear so....I'll defend that moron Phelps and his inbred crowd from those who have no apprecation for the 1st Amendment of the Constitution. The issues are larger than my own personal feelings.
when you say "wingnuts", you mean left wing nuts correct
since its the left wingers that werre protesting the military funerals...with whats her face
Did you not even look at the title of the link in the post you quoted? I will put it here: "Father of Dead Marine ordered to pay legal fees of Westboro Baptist Church Protestors". They have a history of protesting all sorts of funerals, including for some reason, military.

The Phelps clan has become too smart to start altercations as they did 25+ years ago when I watched them do so on my college campus and on the streets of Topeka infront of other churches on Sunday mornings with regularity. Now they are too old, and too fat. They have perfected their way of working those they abuse verbally and manipulating the judicial system for their financial benefit.
It is time they are outsmarted, outmaneuvered, and outsued.
Nope, I've honestly never heard of them. They sound like the lowest of low. You can't get much more pathetic than to prey upon the emotions of people mourning the loss of a loved one.
If I am correct, I believe they are a family of lawyers so they know just how far to push the law. people need to find out where they are going to protest, surround them with signs bigger than theirs and drown them out with a song or something.
They show up every year at the 9/11 memorial services at the World Trade Center to scream at the families of the dead, too.
In a most bizarre example of politics making strange bedfellows, they also fly in some of the conspiracy theorists to make their numbers larger. The truther set likely doesn't adhere to Westboro's ideologies, but they'll take the free airline ticket.
Actually, there is a group of biker vets, known as the Patriot Guard...who go around the country trying to protect the funerals (nonviolently) from Phelps crazy bunch..
I joined the Patriot Guard Riders group about a month ago. I have not yet had the privilege to attend a mission yet, (although I wish we never had the need for them).
