In a recent news release by the Associated Press, apparently the US has given over $1 billion dollars thus far. The European Union's 27 countries have choked up $575 million dollars combined. Why is it always the US that is left with the task of being the primary contributor as our standard of living continues to slip daily? Please, leave party politics out of this....this has been a trend for much longer than 12 months.
Haiti govt gets only 1 cent of every US aid dollar - Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100127/ap_on_bi_ge/lt_haiti_us_aid - broken link)
Quote:
The U.S. is providing the largest slice of a global response that totals more than $1 billion in government pledges. The European Union's 27 nations are contributing $575 million.
The U.S. also has long been the largest donor of ongoing foreign aid that Haiti depends on for up to 40 percent of its budget, with more than $260 million in U.S. money last year aimed at promoting stability, prosperity and democracy
Not to so well, but I guess the reasoning is without any kind of assistance, imagine the levels of instability.
My question is where is the United Nations, the Organization of American States and the Association of Caribbean States in all of this? Why are we looked to as lead, again?
"The Association of Caribbean States (ACS; Spanish: Asociación de Estados del Caribe; French: Association des États de la Caraïbe) was formed with the aim of promoting consultation, cooperation, and concerted action among all the countries of the Caribbean. It comprises twenty-five member states and four associate members. The convention establishing the ACS was signed on July 24, 1994 in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia."
"Natural Disasters: The ACS contains a Special Committee on Natural Disasters which aims to coordinate the planning and response to natural disasters in the Caribbean.[3] The main focus of this committee is to maintain organization and attempt to maintain a high level of ability to cope with natural disasters."
So where are they exactly? Apparently not leading the efforts. If we keep doing everything, how does it benefit those we're helping? We need to support, not take over.
