A Newt Gingrich run in 2012? Quite possible but... | Top of the Ticket | Los Angeles Times
Looks like Newtie-boy is GOING FOR IT in 2012. He recently drank the kool-aid. Not a little, either. He drank the whole damned 55-gallon drum of it. Yep, Newtie came out and spoketh high and mighty words in praise of Gawd Almighty. Hallelujah! Pass the collection plate, fuel the campaign with Good Old Praise (GOP)! Yeah verily, Newtie-boy has got religion and he's taking it to the mountain tops to proclaim it to the skies.

Read all about it, here.

Excerpted snippets:

- When Gingrich came to power ... his Contract With America was a document of fiscal conservatism that mentioned God only in passing. ... When he led the impeachment of Bill Clinton ... Gingrich was involved in his own longtime extramarital relationship with a former aide, who is now his third wife. ... never been particularly close to the religious right. ... a promoter of traditional values ... sought a divorce from his first wife while she was recovering from cancer surgery.

- But as his presidential aspirations swelled in recent years, Gingrich took the road to Damascus. He went on James Dobson's radio show to talk about his adultery. He spoke at Jerry Falwell's Liberty University. He appeared on GodTV. He converted to Catholicism. He wrote a book, "Rediscovering God in America," and produced two related films. He's at work on a documentary about Pope John Paul II's role in defeating communism.

There we have it. Newt wants the blessings of the extreme religious right (RR), which is about all that remains of the GOP. He'll try the usual Rovian tricks of trying to appeal to others on fiscal conservative grounds, or abortion, or guns, or gays, and for sure he'll wave the flag of patriotism and shout "support the troops" with all his might; but not even the RR buys his mealy mouthed transformation. They've heard it all before. The RR got used by the idiot Bush for 8 years. There are other GOP'ers out there with more credibility in the RR than Newt, and Newt's neo-fascist efforts to wrap himself in the flag and carry a cross may get him the votes of a few old Floyd R Turbo types.

The RR and the rest of the nation also has seen through the vaporous promises of the pious-sounding GOP candidates.

Isn't it sad that the religious right has thrice-married philanderers like Gingrich and Guilliani for "inspiration."

Nice picture, thanks.

BTW: In the WaPo article I linked, we see that Newt is now way heavier than in his publicity shots; a Cabbage Patch Kid.

I agree. I like what Newt has to say (sometimes) but he screwed up in endorsing a RINO (really she was a Democrat, posing as a Republican) in NY 23.

He has also lost credibility for other reasons. He's done, and I think we need to move on. There are people better than Newt.

that rino pic tells me something is truly odd with many conservatives they throw the rino card at individuals who often think outside the tiny box their in.

I wonder who Gingrich's running mate would be. Palin, Bachmann, Ryan, Jindal, Huckabee, Romney. Maybe an old-schooler, Armey, Frist, DeLay. There are so many combination's for a 400 electoral vote Democratic landslide.

Newt is the perfect choice for me. We will Newt his skills, brains and leadership to fix the mess Obama and the dem congress have made.

I can overlooked his issues with being married more then once because I know that he has the skills needed to do the job.

He did not run on 2008 on purpose, knowing that Obama was running and had the bull**** to scam people over into voting for him. Newt knows that Obama will destroy American and leave it wide open for a conservative in 2012.

Obama was a blessing for the rep party and Newt, that is why he waited it out.
I gave up on Newt when he did that ridiculous global warming psa a few years ago. Then I found about his multiple affairs and his backing of Scozzafava in last weeks NY 23rd senate race. Newt has a higher opinion of Newt than 99% of all Americans. He won't last past the first cuts.
