Back in February, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) voted against the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act in part because she said the bill “doesn’t actually stimulate.” Today, however, in an early move in the 2010 Republican primary for Texas governor, Hutchison attacked incumbent Gov. Rick Perry for turning down the very stimulus money she believed would do nothing for the economy:

Strange politics in Texas?

The funny thing about this is she's going up against Perry for Governor but hasn't officially thrown her hat in the ring.

Back when Perry said No to the unemployment part, Kay "bailout" Hutchison was all over the press saying we (Texas) should take it. When further questioned on the permanent P/T unemployment part she said she would look for ways to get out of it two years down the road. To me that's slimey politics. Perry said No right up front and said why; because of the permanent change to state laws whereas Hutchison publically said that we should take it and in further interviews said she would try to get out of that commitment.

I don't like the woman because she's pandering for votes right now and doesn't walk the talk.

snippet:
“Governor Perry recklessly turned down the federal unemployment insurance money,” Hutchison said. “He never even looked at cutting the ridiculous federal strings attached to that money like I would have done. He didn’t even attempt to negotiate a way to relieve employers from a tax increase while helping Texans affected by the economic downturn.”

Now I did read that part of the stimulus and there were no loopholes. If a state took that money they were obligated to make a permanent change to their state laws and fund it themselves in 2 years time. If they reneged then they had to pay back all that stimulus money. That part of the bill was very simple black and white text with no wiggle room.

So it's all well and good to say "I would have taken it and try to get out of the commitment" but she's not Governor and I, for one, am glad Perry did what he did.

Tex, if she runs, I promise to send her a donation. I've always like her. You can HOLD me to that.

I really don't like Perry, but Hutchinson is a bigger piece of slime. If it comes down to them, I will probably hold my nose to vote for Perry. Hutchinson is like the John McCain of Texas politics, RINO to the bone.

Do I particularly like the woman? No. Did I support and admire Perry's refusal of the stimulus funds? Yes, actually.

That said, I still view Kay Bailout as the lesser of two evils and will vote for her in the primary.
