Nice try,
Republicans have controlled Texas for more than 20 years.
It's a fact. Democrats put the law on the books.
However, the improving economy post-2008 and rising real estate tax assessments (without matching pay increases) made it an issue, especially since about 2018.
IOW, the problem was always there, but it didn't cause real pain until fairly recently. And they seem to be taking steps now that it's become a big issue with Texas taxpayers
You can thank the Democrats for that. They were 100% in control of Texas when that became the law in 1979.
The republicans controlled Harris county and most ISD since the 70s. Clements won in the early 80s. Than Anne Richards. GW Bush was governor in 1995. They had some time to change the law.
Property taxes around 2.7% of property value
In 10 years my property taxes went up $350/month just because they think my house’s value has gone up
I got ya beat Dopo (not a race I want to win though). We did a 1031 exchange so unfortunately no homestead exemption in place until this upcoming tax year. The result...a one year tax increase of roughly $450 a month (Woo Hoo!).
But let those posters that want to dance continue. I live in Texas and this is what happened to my property tax. Do I give a rat's ass if it's the state or the municipality....NO! And this jerk only wanted to deal with taxes based on compression (clearly he wanted to have control of it) instead of giving the exemption, so no, Abbott is not some messiah. I'm not fan of Dan Patrick but he did the right thing on this one to fight for the $100k exemption and it passed with a Supermajority. Abbott can be such a petulant child at times.
I note how the sympathizers of these so-called migrants keep ignoring the part of this topic about Mayor Adams proposing $12 billion of the taxpayer's money to support them. Go figure.
The only reason Texans are getting tax cuts is because we have been overtaxed by the republicans running the state for a long time.
A friend of mine, continually exasperated at her property taxes in Austin, relocated to Arkansas. I visited her once in Austin, and I couldn't believe the taxes she was paying on her house! And she would say: Everything is Big in Texas!
A cousin of mine relocated from Dallas to Phoenix area. One reason, the high property taxes in TX!
No income tax in TX, so they need to make money somehow!

The state also needs to stop giving business such huge exemptions. The Texas Monthly had a piece around 10 years ago. The state, town and ISD gave a business tax exemptions. To show their appreciation the business paid for a very nice football stadium. It was still way cheaper than than what the taxes should ahem been.

So it took 44 Years or nearly half a century for the Republicans to fix it?
Sounds like a cop out considering how long Texas has been under Republican control since 1979.
And you blame Republicans? Republicans are undoing the high-tax structure put in by Democrats.
Fair enough. But, they seemingly didn’t feel much of a sense of urgency to “fix” things….here we are 44 years later.
