As expected, annexation announced and new sanctions coming:

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced, “There are four new regions of Russia,” referring to the Ukraine areas of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson.

Putin is setting himself up for a big embarrassment.

Putin declared the southern occupied regions part of Russia. Now he can claim Russia is under attack if the Ukraine tries to take them back. But that’s seeming more like an empty threat since Russia has suffered considerable losses already and Ukraine isn’t going to just give up now. Looks like both countries are in for a long conflict.

People who naively think annexation is a sign of victory should look up all the territories Germany annexed during WW2 and subsequently had to give up after they lost.

Membership won’t happen while Ukraine is at war. Membership under these conditions automatically means all NATO countries would be at war with Russia.

Russia has lost it's last carrot to offer for peace.

Up until this point in time Ukraine was very careful to NOT cross the border into Russia. They have had the artificially limited goal of liberating their country and demonstrated it.

The possibility of peace with Ukrainian neutrality was always out there. Ukraine respected the Russian border.

Now that Putin has claimed to annex 20% of Ukraine, it is not possible for Ukraine to liberate it's own provinces without crossing a Russian border somewhere. There is now nothing to stop Ukraine from crossing the old border in other places to encircle Russians or cut off communications. Probably they should just go for Belgorod right away and seize whatever military hardware they can carry from there.

Ukraine and Russia are at total conventional war.

All kidding aside this is exactly why Alaska was admitted as a state. However, the Alaskans had more than farcical input into the decision as to joining the U.S.

Yep. Zelenskyy just said that there will be no negotiations with Russia as long as Putin is president.

It's hard to put into words how badly Putin f*cked up by invading.

There was a point in history during the Cold War where the Soviet Union had parity with the US in terms of power. They did not choose to get into a war with the West back then. Now Russia is a lot weaker with a much smaller and shrinking population and Putin has just decided to declare war on the West. And the deluded Putinists are still saying Russia will win this war.

Hitler was able to carry on as long as he did because the Allies really didn't want to fight at first. The US and NATO needs to seriously plan out some pre-emptive moves and not just constantly react to Putin. Think the Kharkiv offensive but on a greater scale that ultimately removes Putin from power. They don't need to talk about it or even threaten Russia. But when the time is right, strike and put the entire Russian regime into disarray.
