Just saw recently the Washington Football Team changed their name to the "Commanders". What is the point of that?
They should be called the Washington Woke.
In their defense, Snyder didn’t want to change the name to begin with…but what’s hilarious is that many of those that were complaining about the name Redskins are complaining about the name Commanders. There’s simply no pleasing these folks.
I do that with the NBA and soccer, although the dives that players in both leagues take are often hilarious, especially combined with them complaining after they embellish them so greatly.
I don't have any official stats, but European soccer is relatively popular among young people. However, I would say it's no where near the level of popularity of American sports, especially the NFL. I've been going to an English style pub and having an English breakfast when a good soccer game is on for 3-4 years.

Nope. The majority of fans were not in favor of a name change. Outside groups forced him

They are worried that announcers will start referring to the team as the Commies, for short. And with reason.
Nearly half of respondents of a national poll conducted by Morning Consult are just fine with the name of NFL team The Washington Redskins.
...
it turns out that far more Americans believe the name ought to remain than those who prefer a more culturally sensitive name. According to the poll, 49 percent of respondents believe the Redskins should keep their nickname, with only 29 percent in favor of the upcoming change and 22 percent unsure.
Here's the kicker...
When broken down by generation, the nickname is less popular with Gen Z than with any others. Forty-five percent of Gen Z are in favor of changing the name, with only 23 percent supporting the nickname’s maintenance. Millennials, Gen X, and Baby Boomers all see a larger percentage of their respective populations support keeping the name.
The desire to change drops to 31 percent for millennials, with 47 percent in favor of the name. Gen X decreases again, with only 27 percent wishing to rid the team of the name, compared to the 55 percent who support it. Only 24 percent of Boomers believe the name ought to be removed, with 56 percent who believe it should remain.
In other words, the same people NOT WATCHING the NFL (younger audiences) are the ones who polled higher to change the name.
