Yup. He was cute and could talk football.
And he wasn't Jeff Sessions.
It's a legendary irony.
Jeff Sessions never really wanted to be a Senator. He was a lawyer and happy to be one, but Sessions was ambitious, and he wanted a seat on the Supreme Court.
The Senate was his way of positioning himself to get the position, because he had been rejected as a candidate for a bench in the Federal District Court, a typical first step to SCOTUS. As a Senator, he could cultivate some support for the critical approval Senate meetings.
But he didn't stand much of a chance of getting it when Obama was President. His route was pretty much closed.
But when Trump became the Republican nominee, Sessions saw his doors opening, so he became Trumps first Senatorial endorser and an enthusiastic campaigner for his best prospect.
But Trump wasn't about to hand over that glory to someone as well known as Jeff Sessions.
He wanted an anonymous SCOTUS prospect who he could boost himself and had no independent qualifications that could be bragged about. The next SCOTUS Justice was going to be solely a Trump choice and no one else's.
So Sessions took the Attorney General's job as consolation prize. At least, it was closer to the Supreme Court than the Senate, and he was more closely connected as a former Judge than a current Senator.
Sessions spent over 10 years planning and executing that plan to get on the Supreme Court. By the time he became Atty. General, he even had built some Senatorial support for it.
It was all Bingo and gold dust for Sessions. Until he had to recuse himself a month later.
Trump was planning on Sessions to defend him in the Senate when necessary. The necessity may be very soon in the coming. Trump wanted a lawyer with some Senate clout.
And then Sessions had to recuse himself or face impeachment and removal. The United States' Attorney General cannot be a convicted criminal's close associate. That's too close to collusion.
Within 18 months, Sessions' legal career was as wrecked as a car wrapped around a tree, and he lost his nomination to be the Alabama Republican candidate for Senator to a football coach from Arkansas!
When Trump told Alabama to hate Jeff Sessions, Alabama sure did hate him.
This is a story that the Greeks would have made a classic tragedy.
The only thing that's missing is the Gods forgot to kill Sessions after they disgraced him.
