Will Clarence Thomas retire now? (Congress, holidays, suspect, Obama)

Thomas is the second-oldest justice on the Supreme Court, at 72 years of age. He can reasonably expect to stay active maybe 5-10 years, at a guess. No telling what the composition of Congress and Presidency will be by then - if they're liberal, then a hard-left liberal who will ignore the Constitution and do his best to get around it, could be put on the Court in his place, possibly to be there for 40-50 years or so.
Or, if Thomas retires now and Mitch McConnell gets his act in gear once more, President Trump can nominate someone like Barret, Kavanaugh, or Gorsuch, or ideally a young version of Thomas himself, get him confirmed quickly as they did Barrett, and we'll have another law-abiding justice on the bench instead for the next 40-50 years.
Works for me.
Wouldn't surprise me if Clarence Thomas were thinking long and hard abut this very idea right about now.
RBG obstinately held out long after she was fit to serve, for purely partisan reasons. She's on record as saying that she wanted to be replaced by a female (sexist and partisan, neither things a judge is allowed to be).
A judge is supposed to be non-partisan so what does it matter who nominates whom?

You jest.
You think Kagan, selected by Obama, sees things the same way as Thomas, selected by Bush 41? If questions and judges were completely non-partisan we would not need 9 of them. For that matter we could just plug questions in to a computer.
OP, as you mentioned, he's 72. Doesn't seem to smoke from what I gather. He's a little on the heavy side, but otherwise seems healthy. You never know when you're going to go, but if he's like Ginsburg, he would have another 15 years left on the bench.
I write all of this to say that, no, I don't think he should (or will) retire. He still (hopefully) has many good years left.

So much for the whole "lame duck Presidents shouldn't get to appoint Justices" charade.
