Any reason McConnell can't do a quiet canvass of the Republican senators, make sure they know what's going on, and then announce to the Senate, "Clarence Thomas is retiring, as soon as his replacement is confirmed. President Trump nominated Allison Jones Rushing yesterday. I'm scheduling 3 days of televised interviews, followed by 2 days of discussion and debate, and a confirmation vote the following week. Be there."

As long as we keep the Senate, McConnell can do exactly that

I wonder if Thomas would consider volunteering? And let a youngster step up for the duty?

Actually it would be better if Stephen Breyer would volunteer. Much better for the Court and the country. But somehow I don't think he will.

Corporate boards, speaking engagements, lobbying, book deals, etc.. Lots of ways for former officeholders, especially well known ones, to make money. A well connected former senator / senior congresscritter, can likely make high six to seven figures as a lobbyist.

Obama post presidency...
