The point is that our recent crisis - the Great Recession - was not convincingly resolved. Whatever inequalities, miscalculations or adverse changes were brewing in the 80s and 90s, were resoundingly entrenched owing to the Great Recession and its aftermath. "MAGA" may be facile as a slogan, but what it really means, is a pining for a counterfactual history, where the Great Recession ended differently... not through bank bailouts or deficits, but through some other, greater national crisis that brought the country together.
