I presume that her comps would change - the comps would no longer be her neighbors recent sales (which would have all been done a SFH values), but rather property that was sold to be developed into multi-unit housing. TCAD is not overly worried about proximity when doing comps, at least if it does not suit them.

I'm not single, but if I were, I wouldn't worry about it. I've had no issues being non-white in the past.

Don't you think that's easier for women's though?

Online dating is mostly white, and they are generally only interested in whites. 90% of white people marry other white people. The second biggest group is Hispanic, so if you're Hispanic it seems like you can do OK. But everyone else is out of luck
So my experience here dating being a tall successful black man is interesting. I personally have dated outside of my race (latina, white) but have dated black women. I have been successful because I am charismatic for the most part (lol) and an extroverted person. With that said I do find myself having to grind and put myself out there here. I have secured dates with successful, attractive women but encounter a lot of flakes.

Even still sometimes I know my "brand" isn't always what people want. I have been the type of black man that some women will "try" because they haven't dated black men or have limited experience. It is also funny that I am competing with hipster white dudes for the same dating space.

I would align more politically libertarian and clean cut so I know I don't mess with some of the hippie chicks here. I feel like I need to be some sort of black caricature to be more appealing but that isn't my style.

I feel Hispanic men have a better chance b/c I think Mexican culture is, in some respects, fetishized here. My Asian friend who I find very good looking does pretty well but he has echoed some struggles of dating as a minority in a white area and being clean cut as well.

I would still think I would have more success in Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, or DC.

What are you serious? So do you think the dating scene in Austin is better for a Latino man than San Antonio? San Antonio dating scene is horrible but even more so if you're Latino.

Maybe I should keep trying hard to move to Austin...

I Like that the OP uses the article to ask some good questions. I personally found the article referenced to be not very substantial.

One person's brief observations of living here for 2 years are valid but not a very in depth analysis.

"I have my suspicions that this is due to the fact that everyone here were the same southern Democrats that institutionalized segregation and racial laws. Instead of switching sides they hid behind the ideals of progressivism and liberalism." Interesting but I don't think so, but heck maybe you are right in some ways. I do know one old Democrat who created groups for whites and blacks to meet each other socially way back in like, Waco because they were anti-segregation.

I think that the lack of real liberalism probably has to do with the anti-progress attitude from Libertarianism. It creates such a strong trend away from any productive conversation and movements toward real change. Without some real foundation and agreed on areas to improve as a community we fracture any true progressiveness that can help people.

The mentioning of the Blacks and Hispanics gentrification is really simplistic and implies their has been no upward mobility and that is just not true. Many blacks can afford the new eastside but choose not to live there, they live in Westlake. I have seen an article written by someone about this. Most of the Hispanics who cannot afford to live in east Austin are the newcomers. The Hispanics who came here in the early 1900's or were born here since the 1930's are selling their homes at great profit and doing quite well. They live wherever they want to. I know because I am married into one of those old Hispanic families.

I have a black friend from Chicago and he would rather live in Austin than ever return there.

This is a really interesting topic but it would take a long time to get at the root of the problem with Austin and real racism.

"Liberalism goes beyond making verbal pronouncements and planting yard signs to showcase political stances. It manifests itself through political action."

Any suggestions on beneficial and effective political actions that a privileged Austin liberal can engage in to address this problem?

Asking for a friend. As some of you may know, I left Austin in July 2016 after 32 years there.
Couple of thoughts:
1) one person's experience or perception doesn't equate to "the truth....black women's experience"
2) Austin is gentrifying and poor blacks are leaving and have left as well as poor whites and Hispanics
3) Austin still has a Texas and southern feel to it
4) It seemed like the author of that piece just wanted to ***** about Trump winning...Snowflake

There's clearly a narrative here and unfortunately, it reminds me way too much of people from San Francisco (where I'm originally from). It's really that "echo chamber" type thinking. Let's all make sure we think alike, and if someone has a differing point of view, let's quash that and/or become distraught over it. That's quite unfortunate.

My wife has orders from me that if I ever utter the words "I'm proud to be a (fill in the blank..Democrat/Republican)", to shoot me on the spot. I don't define myself based on a political party and believe in looking at issues (and the character assassination tactics of both parties has gotten old). I grew tired of the Blue team/Red team nonsense living in the Bay Area. A place where you were ostracized for not waving the Liberal hat, and if you were vocal about a differing viewpoint, it would be very socially expensive for you. I mentioned in another post how refreshing it was to have relocated here (currently in the Round Rock area) and seeing political signs of opposing parties on neighbors lawns and them being civil if not downright friendly to one another. Mind you, I can't necessarily speak for the city limits of Austin, but will say that since I moved here (1 year ago), I have found people here to be considerably nicer than the Bay Area. It's seldom I don't walk past anyone that I don't get a wave, a good morning, or a howdy from. Am a mind reader? No. But unless someone outwardly does something deemed racist toward me, there's no reason for me to come to the conclusion that these people aren't just like me, and judge people by their character as opposed to skin color. Also, unlike the author of the article, I don't paint people with broad strokes just because one person has a racist tendency (I treat that individual that way). I think it's unfortunate that type of stereotyping goes on with articles like these and in the media (and in some ways, I can't blame people that aren't black for being tired of it and taking offense to...they should be offended).

Have there been racist events in the history of our country? Of course. But I personally have made every effort to move beyond that as I see no reason to blame anyone living now for that. It's too bad that can't be the rule and we treat individual circumstances for what they are...isolated incidents.

Just my two cents. I understand not every black person will share the same viewpoint.
Excellent post. It seems like nowadays everyone that considers themselves a member of a 'minority group' (black, Hispanic, women, LGBTQ, etc) spends a lot of time looking for trouble that may or not be there.

I feel like San Antonio dating scene is due to the lack of eligible bachelors. SA is a socially conservative city in which many people marry/co habitate young. If you're a single man you will encounter a lot of single mothers.

What has been your issues with dating in San Antonio? I felt as a black man in SA that since I wasn't a "gringo" or a Latino that was from there I had a hard time. Austin dating has been far more successful for me because of it being such a transient city.
