The Catholic church before Vatican II had a extremely rigid vetting process. There was psychological evaluations and more. Also they watched you like a hawk to see if you really were serious about being a priest. It wasn't until the last 15 years they put that back in place. There was a book written on the subject.
First time I was felt up occurred in a seminary. That was multiples of 15 years ago.
Classmate had a birthday party at an indoor pool at a seminary her brother lived at.
Brother and several fellow seminarians turned out for the merrymaking. We were tossed in the pool, rode on the shoulders for pretend combat and tossed into the air. Grabbing us by the “P” was the favored approach. It was weird but did not stop us from having the time of our lives.
One girl had bruises from repeated grabs. Life went on.
A group of priests made a boy strip naked, pose like he was on a crucifix and took photos that they passed around.
Another priest raped a 7 year old kid he went to go visit in the hospital after her tonsils were removed
One priest raped 5 girls from the same family and collected their urine, menstrual fluid and pubic hair and they even found the samples.
Another priest got an underage girl pregnant forged documents from the church saying they were married then divorced her. With the blessing of the bishop, he got an abortion for the underage girl.
There are hundreds of stories like that in the document that you'll need mind bleach to purge from you're brain. This is the level of moral depravity of what these people did and continue to do. ALL of the higher ups knew of it. They even had a play book on codespeak in order to limit the damage. This is a criminal organization and a pedo ring right in the open of the public. It needs to be completely destoryed. Immediately freeze all of their assests.

If you read the many stories you will see that it isn't just children, but boy/girls/men/women of all ages.

Given the numbers, it makes sense that the Catholic Church would have more instances of inappropriate adult contact with children.

Sexual abuse of children happens everywhere, in homes, public schools, religious schools, Boy Scouts, USA Swim, The Olympics, camps and more. Most instances of abuse are not reported. Wherever you find children entrusted to adults, you will find instances of inappropriate contact with children. In most cases, the predator is an adult male. Gay men are no more likely to molest children than straight men.Girls are more likely to be molested than boys. Both are under reported.

Yes, but those secular organizations don't hold themselves up to the holy and don't teach morals and theology as their business. They aren't supposed to be representatives of Christ on earth. The hypocrisy is astounding. The Church hierarchy has been exposed as evil - they have been actively complicit of generations.

If what you were saying was true, i think we would see lots of priests secretly dating or having sexual relationships with adult females, that would be the most likely thing to result from someone being forced to be celibate.
Im curious how many priests are doing this, compared with those that turn to young kids, not sure if this has ever been looked at.
I think the issue is more that normal men - aka those that enjoy sex too much to give it up - don't join the ranks of priesthood thereby making the available candidates for these positions smaller, and possibly looking to use the position for their own pleasures.
Well, if they were pedophiles BEFORE becoming priests, this is something else entirely and has nothing to do with the church then, and the celibacy thing would not be a factor either.

The church is hiding the behaviors and crimes of these pedophiles. And have for centuries.
There's nothing so effective as infiltrating an organization with vile predators to discredit it in the public's opinion.
But there's always a consequence for tolerating predators.
It's unmerciful to their next victim.
Quite a few people from outside and inside ignored this along the way, no one wanted to take a stand. We have seen this in churchs, universities and other organizations where people ignore this behavior. I think the culture is changing and people that ignore this predatory behavior do so at their own risk.
