#3 March of 2014 the Russian Federation annexes Crimea. Subsequently president Obama announces sanctions on Russia, which inhibits the flow of money between the USA and Russia. This means he not only has trouble raising cash, but he has trouble repaying his 'investors', who are notably upset.
#4 Donald Trump announces his run for the presidency in 2015
#5 'Investors' ask Putin for help getting Trump elected so he can solve their mutual problem. Trump adds old Russia hands to his campaign staff. Russian disinformation campaign kicks into high gear. Trump campaign gets the condemnation of Russia's annexation (Crimea) removed from the Republican party platform.
Because Putin is the dictator of Russia. His Presidency is a sham, free elections in Russia are a myth. Putin is an alleged murder and thief and may be the world's richest man because it is believed he has stolen $200 billion from Russia. That's how we know.
The bigger question is why are you defending Putin?
The question is why are you accusing Putin without proof? Because he's bad? Defend the truth. That's all that matters.

Republican Senator Mike Rounds of South Dakota came up with a reason why Trump said what he did
“The president just looked right back at [Putin] and with the same straight face... basically sent a message: ’If you can sit here and tell me that with a straight face and that’s what it takes it to move forward in other negotiations, I most certainly can match you on this, and in fact I can stand here and say, ‘Of course you didn’t do it,’ even though we all know that [you did],’” “The reality is, ‘I know you did it, you know you did it, and you know that I know that you did it.’ So to me, Mr. Putin tried to tell the whopper with a straight face and President Trump basically laid out, ‘You wanna play that game? Fine. I can do the same thing because we all know you did.’”
The senator then said “I can’t come up with another [reason]― we’re all trying to find a reason why the president would have done it. And this is the only logical explanation I can come up with it,”
