What comes first to me depends on the issue at hand. I can't really make a blanket statement that it would always be "Colorado before the U.S.!" or "Colorado before Arapahoe County!" It'd depend on a number of factors.

Robert E. Lee made that decision almost 150 years ago.....wonder what the course of the American Civil War would've been had he made a different choice.

I see no separation between them all. I'm a citizen of my hometown and my county at the same time I'm a citizen of my state and nation.

All the difference there is to me is the responsibilities each has. My city's are the smallest, and it goes up from there.

But my allegiance to them all is equally the same.

So sloth is your basic reason why you are still living in the United States?

It seems to me that if you wanted in emigrate to any of those other countries, you could. It would take effort, but I know a couple of folks who emigrated. It isn't all that hard if the desire is deep enough.

Or is it just the opposite and you are a citizen of your community, first and foremost?
We could learn a lot from the differing opinions, with this gem.

I doubt we'd learn much. A lot of it probably has to do with whether you're in a state with a strong self-image.

I have allegiance to myself, my family, and my friends.

I will never pledge allegiance to a State or to the idea of a State ruling over me.

Agreed. I've always felt the pledge of allegiance in school was a little weird. Excluding the "under God" part that needs to be removed too.

The Pledge is an oddball. Written by a socialist, but conservatives are the ones up in arms about wanting it said every day in school. Never mind the implications of pledging yourself to a gov't on personal liberty.

True and true. It's Statist indoctrination at its most basic.

I always get into arguments with so-called "patriots" when I tell them that forcing kids to pledge allegiance to a State is about as anti-liberty as you can get. Then I throw out that it was written by a socialist, and it shuts them up.

You know, I just might start a thread about this...

Between 1836-1845 you would been a Texan. And you would've been free.
