It's a fine line, but there has to be some form of protection and rights in relation to the normal law abiding citizen.
Soon the Government will be able to track your movements through CCTV (the lates technology is facial recognition), ALPR (Automatic License Plate Reader/Recognition, Cell/Mobile Phone signals, tablets etc. Whilst vast cross referenced databases, they will be able to look at all your records from education, health, criminal records through to financial and credit cards and employment records, they will hold details of internet sites visited, phone calls made, they may even hold genetic records in the form of DNA but that's okay because it'a all for the public good and to keep us safe.
They can even hack in to our televisions, phones and see our internet webcams and images and hear our conversations.
The court protecs you. There is no covert surveillance etc as wire tapping etc with out a court order. But if you don't listen to the chatter be a lot more deaths and more children raped .
You want to know who has more eyes on you? The markets. Banks, stores, credit cards.
Feds cannot go into your credit card And track you.- again court orders only --or national emergency etc. terrorism - child safety.

It's probably time for the Fourth Amendment to be upheld again.
See my post, I can track you through public search engine. My sister wanted to remarry, she's got some $$ and hubby only died little over a year, so trying to protect her. I found more than one of her dates... Bad news.. public info
Just watched CNN interview of a hacker. An American based hacker who played games etc etc. got radicalized and I think tweeted setting up all kinds of attacks etc. all over the world... How would we find this guy ? If we are not listening and watching?

Politics has become so dirty on the left, they are playing dirty using the intelligence agencies against the Republicans. This is really sick stuff from Obama administration. This is not what intelligence agencies should be used for.

The Courts don't protect against bulk collection or storage, and is a Judge or indeed a Magistrate really going to decline a warrant.
In terms of targeted surveillance relating to sex offences, that's dealt with by the Police and National Crime Agency rather than the Intelligence Services who target specific individuals, it is the bulk gathering of information on everyone and the storage of all websites and phone calls they have visited or made that is the problem.
In terms of credit card transactions, they are stored and the police and security services can easily monitor targets, and it should be noted that the UK has more powers in relation to such ativity as the US and serves as a warning.
