No. I have lived in various European nations and the level of surveillance in the UK borders on creepy.
When walking around London, look up. You'll see structures everywhere bristling with cameras. There's almost nowhere you can go on main roads in London without being on camera. Same goes for train stations, large stores, museums, government buildings, parks, etc. You're on camera all the time.
It's starting to get really idiotic in the UK, with Local Councils now using legislation designed to combat terrorism in order to spy on people.
All you scaredy cats wanting to be protected from the big bad radical Islamic terrorists better support the NSA's efforts.
You are on to something here, we are always hearing if we don't do this or that they will attack us. Then, they open the borders, blame drug cartel, setup scenarios, fear monger, raise taxes, just to show us how much we need the government to protect us. One look at how the government handled Katrina and people should make up a much better plan.
It's VERY scary how powerful the CIA has become and how it now rivals even the NSA, FBI and the Air Force combined. Talk about an agency that has gone far beyond its charter!
It wasn't that long ago that all of that would not have been palatable to a liberty loving public.
If it has stopped 13 Islamic terrorist attacks the past 4 years that could be well over a thousand lives saved potentially. I think people reluctantly give up their privacy in this global multicultural society.
Nope. Very little good has come from surveillance, certainly nothing proportionate. For all the surveillance, think of all the cases where any "discovery" came from the public, like the Times Square bomber.

and this is one of the mantras the big brother government types keep pushing so they can intrude on the lives of everyone they can so they can control them. this si just another reason we need to make real cuts in the size of government, and perhaps people are starting to see this.
in the end we need to stop looking to government all the time for our security, and rely on ourselves for our basic security. we need to pay attention to our surroundings, and be ready to defend ourselves as needed.
We are actually only still in the very early childhood of the surveillance state. The next 30-50 years will see technologies and societal shifts most of us here in relatively free 2017 can scarcely even comprehend.
Why would anybody be surprised if we were all monitored?
