A 10-year-old Florida girl faces felony weapons charges after bringing a small steak knife to school to cut up her lunch,

School officials say the Ocala 5th grader had brought a piece of steak for her lunch, and had brought a steak knife. According to the report, a couple of teachers took the utensil and called authorities, who arrested the girl and took her to the county’s juvenile assessment center.

"She did not use it inappropriately. She did not threaten anyone with it. She didn't pull it out and brandish it. Nothing of that nature," explained Marion County School Spokesman Kevin Christian, who added that it made no difference what the knife was being used for, they had no choice but to call police.

"Anytime there's a weapon on campus, yes, we have to report it and we aggressively report it because we don't want to take any chances, regardless," Christian said.

The girl now faces a felony charge for possessing a weapon on school property and has been suspended from school for 10 days.

I saw that story; it's ridiculous. The problem with zero tolerance is that there is no room for common sense. This could have easily been handled by taking the knife away, returning it to the parents, and clearly explaining that this was not allowed at school.

My son was suspended for 3 days last year, (age 6) for taking a squirt gun to show n tell. They started giving me bs about how I should be thankful they didnt call and file a police report, and that he ONLY got a suspension.

Later that night I explained to him that he could not go to school for the rest of the week, and his response was..

"But dad, its only a toy"...

At that point I stopped being upset with him.

I would have thought the parents would know better than to do this. It certainly isn't a new rule.

I hae zero tolerance for stupidity... the school is a moron and the zero tolerance program is a joke... they want to be taken seriously and not lose credibility in the future then they should use common sense... its their own downfall if they want to play the stupid fool.. because everyone would think that they are the stupid fool...

There was no indication that the parents knew that she was taking the knife to school, just like I obviously didnt know my son was taking a squirt gun.

Who packed the steak for lunch? My assumption is that it wasn't the kid.

If it was, then I agree the parents have no responsibility.

Arrest is excessive, confiscation and a warning to her parents would be sufficient in my view.

Just think, we count on these people to help teach our children common sense.

ahh, good point. Kids dont exactly choose to each steak, especially during lunch while their friends are usually eating burgers and pizza..
