Which is what I previously stated in Post #7 in this thread.
I saw that and agree with you. I think that the discussion that followed about whether the parents knew or not serves as a red herring to the topic of the school's response.
I see that everyone on this board is in some sort of agreeance with the fact that this was a little too extreme. There comes a time when zero tolerance and common sense are going to clash and end up with explosive results.
I saw that story; it's ridiculous. The problem with zero tolerance is that there is no room for common sense. This could have easily been handled by taking the knife away, returning it to the parents, and clearly explaining that this was not allowed at school.
Another issue where things are simply seen in black and white. Zero tolerance policies are very silly in my opinion, and the response was definitely over the top. I agree though that the parents have some responsibility since they probably packed the lunch and should know the rules even though the rules are stupid.
Absolutely insane. If the school administrators saw she was using it to cut her food, all they had to do was call her to the office AFTER lunch, discreetly tell her the knife violated the policy, and ask her not to bring it to school again. That way, they still enforce their zero-tolerance policy, they save the girl the embarassment and the criminal record (for heaven's sake), and they end up not looking like clueless morons.
