I'm not advocating it, but that was the social norm for the entire recorded history until very recently. Young men were supposed to go out and learn how to be men, while girls at 15 were put on the marriage mart to hook up with men in their 20s or 30s (or older). It's weird, but it actually seems the more natural course because girls mature faster than boys and the window of when they can procreate is smaller.
