And most of the MSM articles describe them as "wealthy Americans".
Do they want us to think that all 6 million of those US citizens living and working abroad are all rich ?

Not at all. Most of those are working for a U.S. company and are assigned oversea and they're not 8itching about paying U.S. taxes.

There's a cost to being a member of society.
Did you not have the opportunity to make that money because of this society?
See how much you can earn moving to another country.

Actually these people earned that money in a different country and paid their taxes to that country.
The US wants tax on that money, not earned on US soil.
We are the only country that does that.

Actually a lot of the big multinationals operate independently.
At my old company (big multinational) you could get a long term assignment but never a transfer.
You had to quit in the US and go apply in the other country.

That's how the big multinationals get around the foreign tax.

Stats for your assertion that most of those 6 million work for US companies ?

I fully understand that there is a price to be paid for being a member of a society. However, I wasn't the one saying wanting to keep some of the money you earn is an "entitlement" mentality.

I just wonder when enough is enough. I won't enter into a cut and paste battle with you because it is simply unproductive. For every chart or slick infographic that proves X, there are three more proving Y instead. I would say that the tax code needs work. If I were running the show for a day, I would prioritize the efforts for reform as 1) Close existing loopholes. Nothing wrong with tax incentives/credits, but close the loopholes. 2) Set a fair, flat rate. If you make $20K or $2M per year, everybody pays 15% as an example. 3) Simplify the whole thing. Get rid of the stacks of tax law on inheritance, estate taxes, capital gains. Streamline the whole thing so it makes sense.

Well, 0.002% of them have now renounced their citizenship, and that's the big news we are talking about
.

For every one American who wants to leave, there are a 100,000 people trying to get into the USA. And one thing is certain, if you leave, you had better renounce your citizenship because the IRS in on the hunt. Good luck to all who move out.

And you don't know that they are the "wealthy".
One in England did it because he was concerned that the law firm he worked with would never consider him for partnership because then the firm would come under US IRS scrutiny. That guy is 37 years old.

Sure you have your Tina Turner and Denise Rich and Saverin who definitely did it to escape taxes but you probably have many more that are just working class people.

And it's the penalty that rakes in the money, not the taxes because these expats have to file US income taxes even if they earn no US income which many were not aware of. You do not need to do that here..no income, no file.

One widow in Canada has about $300K in various accounts and has been there for 30 years.
The IRS wants $75K from her in back penalties.

And the Fed puts out a report of who renounced.
