The idea of "universal background checks" as a means of reducing crime is just foolish. I find it hard to believe that anyone thinks a gang banger that went out and bought a gun as a "straw sale" for his gang banger buddy is now going to take his buddy to a local gun shop and do a background check to transfer it. Or that someone with a stolen gun or one illegally converted to fully automatic fire will. I mean really...if you believe that, I have to let you know...I have some money stuck in Nigeria...send me your bank account info and I'll send it to you.

"Strawman sales" (where someone buys a gun for someone not able to legally purchase one), which would include things like buying a handgun for a friend or family member visiting from out of state, are federal felonies now. As is lying on form 4377s when purchasing firearms. We have prosecuted 44 of those cases in the last several years. As Joe Biden says, we don't have time to enforce our current laws, that is why we need more restrictions. Idiotic, but pretty much sums up "gun control".

Like every other "gun control" law, anyone with any sense realizes that UBCs will cost the law abiding person money and be a big inconvenience to lawful sellers, and will do absolutely nothing to keep guns out of the hands of the very criminals that are the problem in the first place.

Most gun owners realize that gun control proponents don't actually give a damn about gun deaths or crime though. It's all about control and punishment of those that choose a different lifestyle than them. They could have the honesty to say so...but honesty is the last thing you will hear from a gun control proponent.

Owning a car, and more specifically, driving it on public roads, is not a right.

If you want to make a proper comparison, you would have to use something like free speech, or religion.

How about this: If you want to practice Islam, you must first register with the federal government and pass a background check, so we know that you're not going to fly a plane into a building. If you fail to pass that background check, you're forbidden from practicing your chosen religion. You're far too dangerous a person.

Does that work for you?

The bottom line is that gun ownership is a RIGHT. I know you say you have a gun or two, and that you're pro-gun rights, but honestly, Memphis, you're not. Not really. You're pro-gun privileges. If you want to maintain that position, then you need to also be petitioning for a repeal of the 2nd Amendment, because that's the proper way to go about it. Stop trying to do an end run around the Constitution.

You're probably right in that it won't pass.

But there's a chance, however small, that it will.

The anti-gun crowd is very adept at this. Throw handfuls of sh*t against the wall, and eventually some of it will stick. In the meantime, anyone who challenges said sh*t can be labeled crazy, paranoid, etc., because "don't worry, it probably won't pass."

Some of it does, OG. New York rushed some of that sh*t through, and in their haste, they forgot to exempt law enforcement from the lunacy. NOTHING that's that rushed or that obviously hasn't been carefully considered should EVER be passed, ESPECIALLY if it impinges on the Bill of Rights.
