Seung-Hui Cho's mental instability was well-documented yet he was able to purchase his weapons as easily as a child buys candy at the store. The Columbine killers were still minors when they purchased theirs. Yup, everything's good here. Move along.

The legal definition of mentally incompetent as it applies to gun ownership is defined as "having been committed or deemed mentally incompetent in a court of law."

So no...

Even Cho was not mentally incompetent. Unstable maybe but being unstable is NOT sufficient for loss of rights.

You have to pose a credible and immediate threat to yourself or others.

So yes... Everything is good here for people that know what the hell they are talking about.

Move along...

You want to "follow the money?"

Start with the NRA.

Look at what one of the Va Tech survivors was able to do. What good is documenting mentally ill - at risk people if they can walk into a gun show and purchase whatever they want. If you can't separate the mentally incompetent from their guns, it doesn't matter how much health care you have for mentally ill individuals.

In "Living for 32," Goddard says he was able to buy, for example, an Egyptian Maadi AK-47, a TEC-9 and a MAC-11 machine pistol at gun shows across the United States.
"I bought the same gun that was used to shoot me," he said. "I bought it all, all without a background check and it was all legal. My question is, 'Why is that legal?'"

Only licensed dealers are required by law to perform background checks on the people to whom they sell guns while private sellers can make gun-show sales with no background checks.
This is known as the "gun-show loophole" and Goddard has made it his mission to close it.

Nope...

Most of my guns are from private sellers. None have killed anyone yet...
,

Well, goody for you.

How about all those other private sales out there that enabled evil people to get guns because there was no background check?

Do you honestly believe that criminals don't buy guns through private sales, knowing that they can do so with no oversight?

So you honestly believe criminalizing private sales will atop criminals?

Personally, I consider anyone between the ages of 12 and 20 to be temporarily insane, and should be treated accordingly.

How about conducting private sales through a "broker," someone who is licensed and can do the background check and who would charge a small commission in exchange for his/her services?

What is wrong with that?

Why won't you compromise?

How are mandatory background checks criminalizing private sales? For people who claim to have nothing to hide, y'all act like you have something to hide.

So we'll put you down for gun laws that don't allow anyone from 12-20 to own or fire one.

Great news! Who's next?
