This is a newspaper that has long campaigned against the right of the people to keep and bear arms.
Now they feel threatened themselves, although there have been no threats in all the massive mail they have received after publishing the names and addresses of gun permit holders.

Guns are good for the goose but NOT for the gander.
[update---Putnam County officials have since announced their intention to not comply with the Journal News' request for the names and addresses of pistol permit holders]

I would think that gun owners would not have a problem with that information being made public. Isn't the usual argument made that if criminals know you have a gun or guns, they'll skip your house, or business, or school, or restaurant in your neighborhood and go somewhere else? So now they have a registry of gun owners so they can avoid any criminal activity in those homes/areas.

On the flip side, now the criminals know who isn't registered to own a handgun, which gives them a much better guess at the safe houses to break into.
I'm not even going to get into the invasion of privacy issue, since that should be apparent to anyone with common sense.

Seriously??
Obviously this is true for home invasion or armed robbery. In that case the criminal would prefer that the occupants be unarmed.
But when it comes to burglary of an unoccupied building, having the information public could make one a target for burglary. I'd think that would be obvious.

As I've pointed out in the other thread suppose the next Adam Lanza who couldn't legally obtain guns uses this list to steal weapons and them massacre a bunch of school kids?

Is a license or whatever it is to buy/own a gun a private record, like your birth certificate, your medical records, etc?
Yeah, well, that has been the pro-gun-ownership argument all along, that owning a gun keeps the criminals away, makes you safer. Guess those who don't own guns will find out in that area. I still don't understand why the gun owners are so upset, seems that they like for people to know they own guns.
