I believe passing a constitutional amendment requires the approval of the legislatures of 2/3 of the states. Being that no states with large rural population would support an amendment to repeal the second amendment and ban civilian access to firearms, isn't such a task impossible?

I don't think they would be able to. At all.

Yes, which is exactly why gun-rights advocates are proposing it.

It requires 2/3 of both houses of congress and 3/4 of the state legislatures, or by a convention requested by 2/3 of state legislatures and then ratified by 3/4 of state legislatures.

Amending the constitution is next to impossible.

Congress debates and can't decide about moving bear carcasses out of Alaska and you think they can ratify the Constitution ?

No, I don't believe it would happen.

But Executive Orders and over time the interpretation of the Supreme Court can accomplish something functionally similar. The checks and balances aren't what they were meant to be.

Really? You think the South, Great Plains, and mountain states would support it? I imagine it would have trouble even in the Midwest. The map would look similar to Bush's 2004 map, except it's not population that matters when amending the Constitution it's number of states.

No, you asked whether such a task would be impossible, and I said it would. Obviously.

It is more impossible than you seem to think that the 2/3 goes with the proposal by Congress and that is both houses. Then 3/4 of the states have to ratify the thing. It will be tough to get done.
