You beat me to it. That episode pretty much summed up presidential politics in this country. I'd have to go with Obama/McCain as worst, but Ford/Carter was a close second.
I have to agree with you on those two elections. Sure enough they were bad. I was getting ready to say exactly what you said.
It's be 1968, Nixon/Agnew vs Humphrey/Muskie and that pesky 3rd party George Wallace/LeMay
We had a choice between a Nixon who turned out to constitute the biggest cover-up on a national level, Hmphrey was not a bad choice however, he was not charismatic. Then there was Georgie a KKK member biggoted racist who won a lot of primaries in the south...no surprise there.
For those of you too young to remember you might want to read about Watergate. The mess it created brought on the modern day investigative reporter and lack of trust in the government.
I had forgotten about Wallace. That really was a messy election. Nothing since has topped it in my book.

I certainly do remember the violence riots in Chicago around the time of the DNC convention---the National Guards and all the police presence and the break in. Very scary times!
I agree, it is a toss up between those two elections. Ford wasn't a bad president, he was burdened by the circumstances of his ascension to the post, and people could not forgive him for that.
Ford pardoned Nixon. I hope they ended up together.
In my lifetime, I would have to say George H.W. Bush and George Bush (btw, I'm a conservative from Texas).
IMO, we had no business invading Iraq (I and II). Did Kuwait deserve what happened to them? No (according to who you ask). However, why did we need to take the initiative when very few countries gave a rat's a$$ about what took place?
Bush made a cluster**** of a blunder by invading Iraq a second time on top of botching the invasion in Afghanistan and for trusting Pakistan so much. He also did nothing to investigate nor listen to the few voices who were raising red flags about the impending economic meltdown.
Imagine if the 2008 economic meltdown could have been avoided? Imagine how much $$$ and how many friends, family members you may know of, Americans in general could have been with their families today had we not gone into Iraq? Had we planned better for Afghanistan?
Ford pardoned Nixon. I hope they ended up together.
It was the correct decision for a nation needing to heal, and truthfully, it left Nixon tarnished goods for life, a fate worse than any conviction could have brought, with endless appeals or a declaration other than guilt.
