To use a name that encompasses an entire continent of diverse peoples seems absurd. Personally I prefer American
I know you pride yourself on being intelligent, Edward, so I won't insult you by pointing out the utter stupidity of the above statement. I'll just let you read it over and figure it out for yourself.
Go back and read within this very thread. Several people (including myself) have given a definition for African American. Once you read this definition, the answer to your question will be clear.
I'm sorry but this is silly. African American is not meant to be an insult. How in the world is someone suppose to know you're from Ghana at first glance? Also it is correct if you're from Ghana or your family is from Ghana and you live in America, you are in fact African American. Yes Ghanian American is more specific but African American is still correct.
Personally I use both depending on my mood and what the situation calls for. If I had to choose I'd say black is just fine.
If you want to call yourself Ghanian American that's just fine. Go right ahead. If you're from Jamaica but was raised in Alabama. Call yourself Jamaican American but don't be like the woman in the article. Acting shocked and appalled over something so trivial is inane at best. Its not like the person intentionally set out to do harm. And technically you're of African descent as well if you're from Jamaica. Jamaican American is more accurate. What I'm saying is that African American is not incorrect and that does who are offended well...should stop being offended lol.
Black American is silly and you'll never catch me using the term. You're black. I'm black. Lovely weather we're having.

That is how YOU define it, not everyone.

I personally have always disagreed with people refering to their heritage as a part of their citizenship. If I said, I am an Irish American, people would look at me like I was nuts. I appreciate when someone of any heritage calls themselves simply as an "American".
And yet many people born in the USA say that they are Irish American. Indeed some say just Irish. You couldn't live in NYC because every ones knows that Woodlawn isn't an "American" neighborhood. Its "Irish", and not every one there was born in Ireland either.
