And why not. Our education system promotes it with everyone's a winner, we're all the same, social promotion over actual skill. The family unit promotes it with kids getting what they want when they want it.
Then they become adults and reality is not how they grew up.
The recession and lack of jobs only drove the numbers upward this year.
The poll (Pew) had the following breakdown:
49% of the 18-29 crowd favor socialism
55% of Blacks favor socialism
59% of liberal Democrats favor socialism
The poll was about people's reaction to the terms (words).
Yeah, it's just a word, that's why it doesn't mean much. Are we "socialist" if we enact UHC? Are we already "socialist" because we have food stamps and social security? Or to be "socialist" do we have to turn into Cuba? You'll get a different answer to that question depending on who you're asking.

You're looking for something else in this poll and that is NOT what the poll was about. It was about people's reaction to the words. What it showed is that more young people are getting comfortable with the term "socialism" and not liking the word "capitalism".
Of course everyone has their own definition for what it means and this poll did NOT define them. This poll is about the reaction to the word.
Evolution to a new system has to start somewhere; it doesn't change overnight.

I know. Which is why I've realized that maybe my first right-wing instinctual tendency to start incoherently ranting about evil communist public school indoctrination may not be warranted here.

And my point is that evolution to a system requires comfort with that system, not just the word for that system since you're only making that connection based on your particular definition.
For all we know the people who prefer "capitalism" are anarcho-capitalists and the people who prefer "socialism" prefer capitalism with UHC. So this poll really doesn't mean much outside of the context of a discussion on the 2011 political glossary.
