I'd say government efforts of egalitarianism were failures.
Simply put, it's about the growing divide with wealth and income, and the legislation, or lack thereof, that allowed it to happen.

There is nothing illegal about that. People have the right to get and be rich in America, as in any true "free" society. What you should ask yourself is why are you jealous of and covet another's goods/wealth, intead of earning it yourself, like most of them did?

As for legislation, that would be a clear, articulate answer, but illegally camping infront of City Hall won't see it get passed. We're getting more and more annoyed with you, not endeared to you.

What is the evidence government is competent to impose egalitarianism?

I believe that thier efforts are imed at the wrong target. Yes we can all agree that there are some real scum bags on wall street. We just about all agree that lobbying in DC needs to be regulated a lot more.
But the bottom line is that is the elected reps who have broken the faith with America. Their backroom deals, their love affair with the power brokers and money brokers. Its our elected reps these people shoild be blameing.
If my wife has an affair I blame her. She broke the faith. I dont blame the scumbag she is bedding. I might hate him might have no respect for him but is my wife I blame.
Our elected reps took an oath and they have betrayed the people. Not just the Dems, the repubs too. How can anyone say one party acts any differently than the other?????

Why I work

I work because I like the feeling of accomplishment and self-reliance

I work because I have bills to pay and don't depend on others (especially the government) or the 1% to pay them for me

I work because I have family I like to help when they need it

I work because I like having money I can give to my church and to charity

I don't use credit cards because I like to live within my means

I don't get loans, because I am smart enough to realize I may not be able to pay them back

When I do one day go back to college, I'll be sure to get a degree in a useful skill that the marketplace needs at the time

And finally, when I was unemployed, I looked for work for all of the above reasons, I didn't camp out at a park (illegally, btw) for only God knows how long

I realize our society has problems, but I try to solve them through the means and institutions our free and democratic socety has, I don't illegally camp out at a park. And how dare any one who has the comfort of parents wealthy enough to support them and give them a roof over their heads voluntarilly give it up and go illegally camp on public land (or private, as in the context of the OWS)anyways, when so many Americans are homeless and starving don't have the luxury of that choice.
Geez, self-satisfied much! So why do you even care about what these folks are doing? Are they depriving you of something, taking money out of your pocket, making your life miserable, what?!! What business is it of yours what or how they choose to protest? It's their constitutional right... or must everyone who wants to stage a protest obtain your permission first? And if it really bothers you so much, then get off your lazy butt and go stage a "counter-protest"!

The problem might be beyond your comprehension, I don't know. It's not about jealousy.

Think of it this way. The whole world knows that stealing is wrong, right? However, ONE neighborhood in the entire world was given a pass. Only THEY are allowed to steal, while the rest of us must abide by the law.

That's pretty much what this is about. It's not jealousy. It's a stacked deck, and we let it get that way over time through apathy and inaction.

Well, yes, they're demanding loans be forgiven and the credit rating system be abolished.

How come you guys don't "Occupy" the WH or Capitol Hill? At least then you would have some air of credibility.

I say let'em give it a shot. They're turning up the heat, that's for sure. With any luck OWS will be a catalyst for bigger and better things later.

Would help to know exactly what they want.

Being against corporate greed isn't a goal.
