I still think the demand for housing is hot enough in the Southside such that the waterfront condo project in the OP should still be economically feasible. Plus with more residents right in the SSW, it's only logical to assume that this would have a positive effect on the retail nearby.

Ah yes, my mistake, I should have clarified... I had the toby keith thing in my brain when I was typing and totally forgot what the original topic was. Yes, housing is still very strong in the South Side and a condo project would be great, and as you noted, would hopefully interject more life to the empty stores in the SSW.

Back to the TK restuarant/bar, it could be successful if it was unique enough. I was just thinking from a developer prospective seeing the empty stores there may make them wary in building something new.

True, several of the stores that went out (Joseph Beth, Sharper Image, Z Gallerie) closed because their parent companies filed for bankruptcy, not because anything is inherently wrong with South Side Works. I'm sure a smaller bookstore or something like Sephora would do fine there.

I agree a lot of it is national issues, but I also think they overbuilt the retail and underbuilt the residential.

BTW, here is an old thread. Not many advocates here in Pittsburgh. We like to believe wed are becoming too sophisticated for a place that caters to a certain mentality.

Elitist much? Its not my cup of tea, but any development is good for the city, even if it brings in people undesirable to you. If someone wanted to open up a new gay bar would you also be opposed to "a place that caters to a certain mentality" then too?

Don't shoot the messenger. I just posted an old thread. Read through the thread and you'll see a general consensus.

I wouldn't say its 'elitist' not to want this kind of place in town... it will do well here though. There is a strong country market in Pittsburgh, as evidenced by the ridiculous amounts of country stations we have on the radio compared to other genres. Not my cup of tea. Whatever though, hope it brings more people to the southside.

Not to resurrect the dead, but I stand by my sentiments in the old thread. Even if a given place just fills a small niche, I am fine with that. To each his own.
