There are several of these reality-competition shows I quite enjoy (mostly the cooking shows for me, plus Project Runway even though I actually don't care at all about fashion). There is a bit of interpersonal drama (probably manufactured in most cases), but I generally enjoy watching creative people try to perform under extreme pressure.

The reality show part of it I can understand (I think they're generally annoying too), but I can't understand bashing the art form. It is an integral part of gay culture.

As we documented previously, drag has also long been an element in American comedy in general.

I'd rather Pittsburgh be represented on reality shows by drag queens than those women on "Dance Moms."

My wife watches many of these. So we don't talk much anymore.

That said, I'll give you Project Runway but only during Santino's season. At least they're making something. Same with many of the cooking shows. More than just "hey, look at me!"

Exactly. As long as the core competition takes real creativity and skill, I think there is at least potential for an interesting show.

Drag Race falls into this "making something" creativity category, though.

Yep. I suppose Last Comic Standing might be its closest cousin in the reality-competition world.

fyi santino is a judge on drag race.

and yeah, i definitely classify drag race with shows like top chef and project runway. it's actually sort of a parody of project runway, with ru paul playing both tim and heidi. and, um, tyra. but the contestants have to be able make costumes (and sometimes props), do both improvised and scripted comedy, dance, sing, etc on top of doing their drag transformations, which are pretty spectacular in themselves. it's sillier (in a really intentionally cornball, 70s variety show way) than some other reality competition shows, but it's not just a "put a bunch of a-holes in a confined space and see what they do to each other" show like the real world or dance moms or whatever.

that's "untucked", haha.
