The Hill is pretty bad. The projects on Bedford are awful. It is surprising how many vacant lots there are in the Hill.

It really isn't fair to compare the Hill to neighborhoods in other cities. For one, the Hill has a very small population in comparison to nieghborhoods in other cities.

I can't understand how some people can recommend living in the Hill. Crawford Square is one thing but the rest of the Hill is something else.

The house in question is on the edge of Crawford Square.

"The rest of the Hill" isn't an undifferentiated mass. The Upper Hill, for example, also merits a separate analysis.

Fer chrissakes, why all the tippy-toeing and rationalization? The Hill is a crime-ridden ghetto, and will remain so for a long time, certainly beyond the lifetimes of any posters here.
Sure, you personally may never get shot or assaulted, but what about petty crimes? Such as burglaries, auto theft, vandalism, etc? If you are brave enough to purchase a home. what do you think it's resale value will be if you need to sell it? How large a percentage of potential buyers will automatically reject it due to location?
With other choices out there, why would you take the risk?

Certainly a true statement

Maybe, maybe not. Every neighborhood changes. Since I was in school, Sheraden, Mt. Oliver, Lincoln Lemington have all gone downhill big time. Other areas, like the South Side and Herr's Island have improved immeasurably.

The Hill District has changed in the past, and relatively quickly, and will do so again in the future. But you're right that it is a pretty speculative play to buy there now.

Well, I'm 62, so MY lifetime is likely shorter than many others here! However, for as long as I can remember, the Hill has been a bad area, and I believe that it remain so for a long time.
My wife went to nursing school at South Side Hospital in the 60's, and she has nothing but fond memories of the South Side back then. We both agree that, for the most part, it has improved since then.
My sense is that most neighborhood changes are negative than positive, certainly with exceptions. But the trend seems to be more Sheraden, Mt. OLiver, Carrick, etc., than say, Lawrenceville, or even parts of the North Side.

Given that parts of the Hill have already changed for the better, it seems pretty silly to me to insist that no more such changes are conceivable.

Correct, although that is in the neighborhood variously known as Uptown, the Bluff, and sometimes even SoHo. Nonetheless, I think the recent investment in Uptown does bode well for much of the Hill.
