Looks like Kansas City won it.

It's a bummer, I really think Pittsburgh would have been almost a slam-dunk for them. Carnegie-Mellon is arguably the best computer science school in the world and Google has a campus in Pittsburgh that focuses on network applications. I wonder if the topography made it too expensive to roll out such an extensive network.

Google chooses Kansas City for ultra-fast Internet service - Mar. 30, 2011

* I accidentally posted this on the general Pennsylvania forum, can an admin please remove that thread or move it here?

That is a bummer, but if it works, there should be a Round Two.

I'd be willing to bet concerns about the terrain, and as a result, the cost of running new lines was a major factor in Pgh losing out. I can't really think of another reason, when compared to KC.

If Pittsburgh won, there might have been complaints of bias.

?? You realize google has offices like that in Pittsburgh in many places. Boulder, CO was hoping to get it, too.

There's a cute picture in this article:

Well...we dangled the Penguins above Kansas City's head and then took them back, so I guess we can let them have one small thing!

KC is just the first of hopefully many installations. As long as Pittsburgh is on the short list, I consider that a positive.

Oh well. At least we got a rapidly growing Google office that could house 500 employees. I'll take that any day. And don't forget, we've also got competition now with Verizon vs. Comcast. I realize it's a battle of the monopolies basically, but most cities in the nation don't have more than one legit option.

I didn't notice on first reading but someone pointed it out on the other thread I accidentally made - this is Kansas City, KS, not Kansas City, MO

I don't know the area but I guess it's sort of a suburb of Kansas City, MO but on the Kansas side? In any case the population seems to be around 150,000 so their choice is smaller than I first thought.

Yep, KCK is a suburb of KCMO. And I believe it is a consolidated city-county. So that 150,000 indicates a city of even smaller size relative to Pittsburgh than you might otherwise think.
