Newspapers operate from advertising dollars and when the economy gets tough advertising is usually the first cutback in a business budget. Newspapers cut their staff to threads just to be able to publish on time and remain viable. Features like a crossword puzzle and Dear Abby are bought from a syndicate at a cheap monthly fee. The cheapest way to fill editorial pages are by using press releases from what you get in the mail.

The Post Gazette online is alright and the Trib online has been a constant mess.
The Press and P-G were under a JOA for many years. A strike, back in the 90's, shut both papers down for many months. When the strike was finally settled, what basically occurred was more or less a merger. The more historic Post-Gazette name was retained, with the Blocks buying out the Press. The Press was also an afternoon paper, which was a dying breed.
