I'd rather see an indie movie house. Why not change the Kelly Strayhorn back to The Regent and use that for indie films?

The movies are a tough business. 3D has given them a breath of life, but it is only a matter of time before everyone is doing that at home too.

I guess my point is I wouldn't want to see anywhere I care about lock up too much land with movie theaters.

That land across from Home Depot isn't doing anything. and in IMO its still far enough away from the core CBD of East Liberty which is were we're primarily focused on anyway, and it s not really disburbing anything to the East because E. Liberty Blvd would be somewhat a hard border with the residental portion into Highland Park...

It would also be a boon for new buisnesses along Highland Ave from Penn Circle to Penn Av as the majority of theater patrons would be coming from that direction....and this would give more cause for Shadyside to come across into E Liberty making the reinvention even that more quick....

Pittsburgh Filmmakers, with theaters on Melwood and in Regent Square, pretty much has a lock on indie film in the East End. I don't know that reconverting the Kelly Strayhorn would be profitable.

SSW is a mix of mainstream and some indie, but the majority still go to the Manor. The SSW theater is holding the Gay & Lesbian Film Festival screenings again this year, which always draws a huge crowd.

At one point a few years ago, there was a plan called Luna Square for Baum Blvd. near Cypress that was to have a six-screen theater, but it was never built. Still in the E. Liberty orbit, but a little further west.

I think the mix indie/mainstream would work best like The Manor and SSW.

That N. Highland location is trashy. Grown men just standing on the corner all day, up to no good. Garbage and drug paraphernalia littering the ground with the stench of stale urine in the air. Then you have the drunks who hang behind that Giant Eagle on Shakespeare and have now ventured to the bus shelter, harrassing people waiting for the bus.
