Hi!

So I moved to Pittsburgh a month ago and I LOVE this city. Are snow tires for my Nissan Versa hatchback a good idea in Pittsburgh winters ? I live in Shadyside and drive to Oakland/Squirrel Hill for work. There are a couple of steep hills in Oakland (particularly where the parking garage is) and also a ramp-y driveway in my apartment complex. Thanks!

I wouldn't worry about it. I never have. Good ole fashioned normal tires work for the city.

Front wheel drive with a good tread should be enough. We usually do not get a ton of snow, usually 40 inches or so spread out from Thanksgiving to Easter.

Snow tires, a shovel, a couple of bags of salt or sand in the trunk..
I predict that it is going to snow 5 feet again this winter, like last winter...

Assuming that your car is front wheel drive, regular all season tires should be fine, as lonng as they are in good shape, with a lot of tread left on them. No real need for snow tires for where you will be driving.

It is a front wheel drive. Thanks for all the replies! I'm going to wait and watch for now..if it storms like I've been told it did last year, I probably will not drive, snow tires or not!

I'd skip the snow tires, run all-seasons with a good snow rating for that particular vehicle (check Tire Rack online), and I'd get a set of chains for the front wheels for when I need to go now, on those icy days. I'd not bother with chains for all 4. Just drive prudently and stop and take them off when you are on better roadway. When I lived in WV, everyone was pretty tolerant of delaying driving until it melted. But I doubt that Pittsburgh employers are that flexible, and I know that the healthcare employers are not.

Ha, I'm from WV too! The hospital there was withing walking distance, and there were a couple of days where I just trudged through the snow to work, only to find out they had shut down the department for the day.

I wasn't planning on skipping work, SorryIMovedBack, just on taking the bus.

i hope last winter was a fluke but i am getting snow tires for my car this winter. my poor car took a beating from the fine job the city did plowing the roads. if the burgh had a decent road crew you wouldnt need snow tires. but since they dont plow anything i recommend snow tires. i bought a extra set of rims and im gonna get tires and change them over for the season
