After killing two Sony Cyber Shots (both due to lense locking up, not worth it to fix), I am in the market for a new digital point and shoot. Main uses will be family vacations & capturing three kids under age five in action, inside and outside in bright light (Texas!)

Other criteria:
  • 7+ megapixels
  • movie clips w/sound
  • durable...we're prone to dropping cameras!
  • good for capturing action
  • self-stabilizing
  • under $200
  • available on Amazon.com
  • intuitive usability - I liked the Cyber Shot for its ease of use.
  • Small, fits in a pocket
Have looked at Panasonic Lumix, Nikon Coolpix, and Canon Powershot.

We have a Sony Cyber-Shot 7.2 Megapixels which works well. I think it was around $200. I don't know much about cameras though, or if you can get it on Amazon. Ours is silver colored. It fits in my sweatpants pockets. It uses lithium batteries. It's fairly durable. I haven't broken it yet. Don't get it wet, though. I wouldn't recommend little kids using it.

Here's everything the camera says (I don't know what it all means):
Sony Cyber-Shot 7.2 Megapixels
Vario-Tessar 2,8-5,2/5,8-17,4 Carl Zeiss
Double Anti-Blur Technology
Super Steady Shot + ISO3200
Face Detection
Full HD 1080 still image
MPEGMovieVX
Super Steady Shot DSC-W80
3X Optical Zoom

Lots of settings:
Movie Mode with sound
High Sensitivity (ISO)
Soft Snap
Twilight Portrait
Twilight
Landscape
Beach
Snow
Program Auto
Auto Adjustment

I think it was about $200 and it's served me well. I'm by no means a pro, but the camera is pretty easy to use and it fits in my pockets in most of my pants.

This looks pretty similar to it. Some of the buttons are in different places, but it looks basically the same.

If you are willing to spend a little more than $200 (NewEgg has it for $199), I highly recommend the remarkably powerful Olympus Stylus 1010. It is absolutely phenomenal for its size and price, capturing both 10.1 megapixel photos and high quality videos with great audio. A relative of mine recently purchased this camera and I have been simply amazed by the quality it produces at such a handy, compact size. By the way, it is very sturdy as well!

Another camera to consider would be the 12.1 megapixel Olympus FE-300.

I like the Kodak Z1285. I paid $199 for it with 12mp and a genuine German made Schneider lens for very sharp pics.

One of my relatives recently purchased a Canon PowerShot A590IS 8MP with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and she loves it. I viewed some of the pics she took with it and I have to say I was impressed.

Today I ordered a Nikon P60 from Amazon for $129 including shipping. Its an 8 MP camera, has 5X optical zoom and lots of other stuff. I also ordered a Scandisk 4 GB SDHC Xtreme III card with reader for about $23.

The reviews on the camera looked good and the price was right, but since I haven't received it yet, I can't actually give a real opinion on it.
