I'm very impressed at how well that zoom works. Hand held?
Thanks for reminding me. I've been looking at some of the 30/35x zoom cameras and I've been wondering how well it works hand held at max zoom in good light and poor lighting conditions.
Post processing. I've found that I'm happier with shots from my HS10 if I shoot them a little soft, then use some graphics software to control the sharpness.
As far as hand held zoom shots, I'm curious about sanspeur's comments, but I was very pleasantly surprised with my experience. The following shots were hand-held in good light at not quite full zoom, then the images were cropped. Note the details in the feathers as well as the talons.

I was surprised too. I did bring my tripod, but the attachment gizmo was still on my old camera, so those images are all hand held....The camera is supposed to have a max zoom of 720 mm, but the exif data says 763 mm. On the other end of the scale minimum is rated at 24 mm, but exif says 26 mm.
thebobs, there are three settings on the menu for sharpness...Hard, normal and soft...So far all my shots were taken on "normal"
Here are two more taken at full zoom and hand held on the first day I had the camera...The white on the drill ship is a bit blown, but I hadn't found out how to adjust the white balance then...By the way both of those ships are at least 3/4 of a mile off shore, and haven't run aground.

That is exactly the reason I love getting information from this forum. Real people giving real opinions, nothing like the guy below.
Well I figured out why that shot was so green. I set the white balance a couple of days ago, and forgot to change it....I have much to learn.
