Forgot to mention Tempe. It has a vibe and doesn't seem like a suburb but it counts and it's on my list.

I like Chandler, especially near the Fashion Mall.

I also would pick Avondale because it's where I live now, but there's a good side and not so good side of Avondale. Thankfully I live north of the I-10 in the better side.

Almost right next door to Avondale is another nice suburb, Litchfield Park. My s.o. and I were thinking about a house or condo there someday.

Tempe would be my first choice for best Phoenix suburb because of the activity along the Mill Avenue corridor/downtown area. Scottsdale would be my second choice because of the downtown/old town/Fashion Square/Waterfront areas that always bring in the business!

Scottsdale is by far the nicest but it may be out of your price range. Gilbert is further out but has low prices and is nice.

If you are old, Scottsdale is where to go. If you are young and active, Tempe is where to go.

Scottsdale for old folks?????? I don't think so. Maybe some parts are geared more for the older set but Waterfront, Fashion mall, and Downtown are always bustling with the younger crowds.

there are nice parts all over the metro - i'd seriously let your work help be your guide as well as access to what is important to you

for the OP, you may want to consider goodyear as well if you plan on driving to see your family in LA - it will save you an hour on the trip opposed to gilbert/chandler - if you mainly fly back, then it's not really an issue
