There really are roof rat reports in many towns - just to make people aware. This is not to scare anyone, but to let people know there are many ways to prevent them. There are two good websites on them. One of them explains them and how they are in many towns. The other (although from 2004) lists the streets and areas where reported

If you call local exterminators they can also tell you the streets they went to - to get rid of them

Obviously, it's not like they are running all over - but it's helpful to know what attracts them and how to prevent them in one's area. They particularly go to citrus areas and where oleanders are.
