I read on some website that there used to be a big problem with roof rats near the Phoenix area. Is it still a problem now? Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

They're still around but I don't think in the numbers of a few years ago. Mostly they have been a problem in older areas where people have a lot of orange trees and mature landscape. I guess they like the taste of oranges. They tell us that roof rats don't carry disease but they do chew through wires and such and cause damage that way. There aren't any around where I live, but we do have flying rats (pigeons) and they may be worse.

The worst area was the Arcadia area of east Phx. I haven't heard much about them for several years.

Older parts of Glendale have some problems with them.

Default Roof RATS!

The roof rat problem is growing and moving throughout the Valley. It is not true that they have been controlled, in fact they have "socked in". These rodents have spread and they reproduce at an alarming rate. The City of Phoenix has not responded with a plan to educate the public nor to take a proactive position. Yesterday's news covered a sighting of rats in a nearby Walmart bakery case eating cinnamon rolls!
