Hi all, I am coming to Arizona April 1st for a month to see if its a place I can see me and my daughter living. I will be staying in Central Phoenix with my cousin. I am coming down to see if i can find a job in the medical field as a Medical Admin Rep or as an Insurance Rep. If not then i will try to find a serving job until then. I have been hearing alot of good things about Chandler, Glendale and Gilbert. I have been to Mesa and did not care for it what so ever, or maybe i was just in the wrong part of Mesa. I did like Tempe although i was by the college and all the bars, whic is my time of scenory but i do have a 9 year old to think about so In want to love in a nice neighborhood with lots of kids. Ill be looking to rent an apartment but dont want to spend over $700.00. Right now I currently work in a Clinic making $17.50 but i am sure the pay rate is lower then that in the medical field. I have been puting my resume on line through CareeBuilder and Craiglsit as well as filling apps out for all the hospitals. I would like to get into a Clininc and work M-F but i dont know any medical clinics out there, that way i would have weekends off and will be able to spend that time with my daughter. I am also goingt to be looking for after school programs for my child cause i will be a single mother with no family. Right now my daughter attend Boys&Girls club after school, which she loves and i only pay $5.00 a year. I cant really afford to pay alot for after school programs. Where is a good place for me to start? I have been doing alot of research on the internet but not everything is as seems. I am really looking forward to this new start in my life and any help will be well appreciated.

Going to Tempe and only seeing the Mill Avenue area is not unlike going to Las Vegas and never leaving the strip. Get a short distance from the University, and t's a very nice suburb with good schools. Whether you can meet your price point in terms of rent there is a different question. Mesa is quite a large city with some very nice areas, I have no idea what you saw. Chandler, Gilbert, and Glendale are possibilities, but since you don't know where you are going to be working, tying yourself down to a long lease in Gilbert and then getting a job on the west side would be a problem. You are going to need to be as centrally located as possible, at least at first, if you don't have a full time job when you get here.

You should really determine where you will be working first and then decide where to reside. There are nice areas all around the valley: NW, NE, SW & SE all have nice neighborhoods and areas, and the valley corner to corner is probably 50+ miles, so the best way the find your area of residence would be to determine where you will be commuting to first.

The best way to get the layout and some info about any city is here.

Google Earth

I had never set foot in Phoenix but spent three weeks searching google earth while checking RE listings.

As soon as I stepped off the plane everything looked familiar and I had purchased a house within 48hrs.

This man speaks the truth. For your budget, you won't be very limited (especially if you rent a 1-bedroom). Checking across many apartment complexes in the city, you'd be find on any apartments on East Thunderbird (east of 7th avenue, all the way down to 44th street), E Greenway (from 27th avenue to 16th Street, then from 36th street down to 56th st), and E Cactus, from Cave Creek down to 56th Street.

These areas are generally safe, middle class, and good to live around, however, there are many good areas of Phoenix you can live on similar to what I described.
Good luck!

I disagree with this. With a 9 year old I'm assuming you would need a 2 bedroom apartment and $700/month isn't enough for a nice, safe area for good schools. I agree with all other posts that you need to figure out where you're working first since the Valley is so large.

There are a couple of issues I think you have to consider: where your job will be located and the quality of the schools. I agree with the other poster that you may need to consider spending more than $700 to find an apartment in an ideal neighborhood. I live in an area of Chandler where the housing market is pretty tight because of the good school system here. For $700 you may get a one bedroom apartment, but that would be in the low range here. Good luck with your plans.
