I think the recent rains have brought those nasty critters out of hiding. Years ago I had a problem with them and called the Town of Gilbert. They sent someone out. I don't know what they did, but haven't had a problem since.

We do the same thing in Tempe... haven't had an issue in a long time, they may have become more proactive in treating the sewers.

If the house has been empty with no one using the drains, then I think the roaches see it as an opportunity to find new territory. The landlord probably knows that with use, this problem will be eliminated. I would never spray inside my house with bug spray, yet alone pay for it.

The cities in the valley "treat" the sewers with a insecticide paint on the manhole covers. The reason you're seeing them inside the house is because the sewer gasses become more noxious in 100+ degree weather, and the roaches follow the pipes trying to escape the sewer gas, often coming inside through the drains. These roaches can fly pretty well, so you'll often find them around the outside of your home, especially if you have a water source nearby.

A few years ago, in a very nice community in Gilbert, we had a massive roach problem outside and I called the Town of Gilbert to complain. They called me back to inform me that they checked the sewers in my area and that they were still treated and free of roaches.. She explained to me that the city sprays something in the sewers that is supposed to keep the roaches away. Anyway, it was absolutely horrifying because my children and I could not even go for an evening walk due to all of the large roaches all over the sidewalks! That was near Chandler Blvd and Val Vista..thank God we moved.

Barb, I did want to mention that geckos eat roaches AND they eat scorpions so I would try to get your cat to eat grasshoppers or something else besides the geckos.

This is what the long timers say, and when the rains fade, so do the roaches.

Sooooo, does anyone have any venture capital to start up a sewer gas canning company.
Bottle it and sell it.

We don't have any more than they have in a lot of other places, and it's not necessarily a widespread issue in the Phoenix area, or, to my knowledge, anywhere else in AZ. So, you may well have nothing to worry about. ( I have never heard of roaches biting, they usually can't get away from you fast enough. )You don't say where in AZ you are moving, but best of luck in your move!
