Hello!!

My H has been offered a job transfer from Jersey to Az. We are seriously considering it. NJ has become increasingly difficult to afford and we could use a change/fresh start. We have 2 children aged 13(son) who is involved with music/theatre and marching band and would like to find a HS with these activities. Our daughter is heavily involved with sports, soccer, softball, basketball. Both kids are academically above average and my concern is finding a school district that is comparable to our NJ schools as well as a community that offers plenty of extra activities ie. travel/rec sports teams. We are looking in the Chandler/Gilbert areas although we are open to suggestions of other areas which may meet our needs. We will be renting a home and are looking to spend no more than $1400 a month. I realize the job market is dismal but I am hoping to find a job shortly after moving, I am currently in the pharmaceutical field as a clinical research coordinator. I was surprised to find many research facilities in the Phoenix area and am hoping there will be open positions available if/when we make the move.

I have been told to avoid the areas of Avondale, Glendale, Surprise, Peoria & Mesa... and look in Scottsdale, Cave Creek, Queen Creek, Gilbert, Chandler & S. Tempe.......is this information accurate?? We do intend to fly out and drive around the areas before making the final decision.

I would also like to hear from families that have basically picked up and moved out to AZ. We have been to AZ one time in 2004 for vacation. We have no family or friends in the area and would love to know if people are friendly and accepting of newcomers. Would hate to move out there and not make friends

Thanks in advance......

Kim

Look at school district websites for programming and school report card sites. That is the most important thing. Coming from 12 years of Catholic school in NY, I can tell you I was shocked at the education in most places here, especially where I teach outside of Phx. Kyrene is a pretty good district. Look for schools with gifted programs since your kids might be eligible for testing. The hardest thing will be the school part of that equation.

Forgot to ask- Where is the job?

Hi Kim,
My family moved here 11 years ago from Philly area. You will find that the majority of people here are from another state. It is very rare when you meet someone who was born here. As a result, the people are friendly. Most neighborhoods have community parks and schools. Chandler and Gilbert both have excellent music and sport programs in the high schools. You will be happy with the programs these districts offer. Check AZ Central.com for jobs along with the usuals (monster.com etc...) Good luck to you in your move.
