Hey everyone, i currently live in South Scottsdale (McDowell and Hayden) and my lease is up soon and i've found two places in South Phoenix one is off of (Roeser Rd and 16th Street) and the other is in a gated community off of (40th St and Baseline Rd) anyone have any insight with this general vicinity? Thanks guys!

16th Street and Roeser is a rough area if you are not familiar with it already. I would avoid it, there's nicer places to live in South Phoenix than that. I would check out 40th and Baseline that area has great proximity to AZ Mills Mall, The Airport, Downtown and easy access to other attractions in Tempe.

In Phx it might look nice during the day, but at night things change quick.. good luck with your move!

I live in South Phoenix and can generally agree that 16th and Roeser is one of the areas to avoid. However I can see some good changes coming. The section just east of 16th was very very rough low income housing. Something a slumlord would own. Well all of that has been demolished and there are some nice contemporary looking condos going up. A massive improvement. Progress like this is slowly but surely being made to the rougher areas around there.

Ahwatukee and South Phoenix are generally thought of as two entirely different locations. Ahwatukee being a very white upper-middle class area while South Phoenix is very mixed and more diverse. Housing is cheaper in South Phoenix but the price goes up the closer to the mountain you are.

Just in case you didn't know geographically speaking, South Phoenix is the area just north of South Mountain while Ahwatukee is the area South.

South Phoenix has always had a bad reputation of being on the "wrong side of the tracks". It takes up a pretty large area, and there are some decent parts, but there is a general perception about much of the south side being infested with gangs, crime, and drugs. Even the "nicer" areas tend to be industrial, and still not very appealing. I'd stick with south Scottsdale ... it's not the best area either, but still better than south Phoenix overall.
