Im boarding an international flight next friday at 8pm at Newark airport. I will be driving from Broomall, Pennsylvania and ive heard the traffic starts to pile up late afternoon. What time should I leave to board this flight? Suggestions I have recd is 2pm!! Do I really need to leave 4 hours in advance for a 2 hour journey?

I can't say that I speak from experience... but you will be approaching NYC-area rush hour traffic on a Friday night. For that reason alone, I'd build in some extra time.

You're going to hit Friday rush hour traffic starting around 3pm both in PA and NJ. Figure 2-2.5 hours to the airport and you want to get to the airport a couple hours early anyway. So that would put you leaving around 3:30 no later than 4.

are you still required to be there 2 hrs in advance? if so, i'd probably leave around 3:30-4. it took me 2 hrs to get into Manhattan last week. and there was a 30 min back-up at the Lincoln Tunnel.

but, the shore traffic has the potential to be an absolute nightmare on the NJTPKE. but the worst usually starts around Memorial Wknd.

edit to say: i thought you meant tomorrow. yeah, Friday (factoring in rush hour) is going to be terrible.

Let's see for international flights you need to be at the GATE two hours prior to boarding, right? Planes board 30 minutes before departure (8pm), that means 7:30. Two hour drive 5:30 - parking at Newark totally stinks - 30 minutes that's 5:00. Security lines, general traffic on a Friday night add at least another hour- 4:00, maybe 30 more minutes - 3:30. That's my guesstimate. I'll tell you though, my husband and I just flew in and out of Newark a week ago and it was much more problematic then Philadelphia. The parking is not as accessible and the whole airport set up seems more complicated. It took us an extra 30 minutes to park there then it usually does in Philly.

Not sure what route you're taking but I'd give myself 4-5 hours. If you take the Blue Route to the PA Turnpike you're hitting KOP traffic. At that point you may be taking the NJ Turnpike and, like others have said, getting to Newark Airport from that point is painful. Agreed, Newark Airport is confusing and the parking is horrible. Have a nice trip
