I know this corner and it's been trouble for as long as I can remember. Too bad the shop owner didn't send the robbers to meet their maker.

Yet, there are still those who will say the police are the problem in these communities ...

What she - and I - are saying is that for any one person, the odds of being a crime victim are probably not that much higher in high-crime than in low-crime neighborhoods if one carries oneself accordingly.
It's actually a lot higher. The murder rate in Haddington is about 1-in-5000 or 0.02%. In Queen Village, it's probably 1-in-500000 or 0.0002%. And in Newtown, 1-in-1 million or 0.0001%.

Therefore, Haddington is 100x more dangerous than Queen Village and 200x more dangerous than Newtown in terms of being murdered. That is actually significantly more dangerous, although at the same time, the actual odds of being murdered are still only 0.02%, which means it's still not likely that you will actually be murdered there if you live there despite the increased danger. It's all a matter of perspective with stats like this.

I would argue that the actual chances of being murdered are actually much lower than this as long as you don't buy or sell drugs.

Also look at the times and places these murders happen. Mostly late at night/early morning around bars and after hours clubs. Some are arguments, revenge killings, gang related, or drug deals gone bad. Stay out of bad areas, and bad places and don't do bad things and your survival chances go way up. Avoidance is the best defense.

Sounds like this victim was minding his own business.

And to elaborate on this:

You don't have to avoid the entire territory.

And maybe to further underscore this: If you live the life of an ordinary working person, you may not even have to avoid all the rough places in it. If you were to divide the number of murders in my Census block group by its population, you'd have an astonishingly high murder rate per 1,000 inhabitants in some years (2016, e.g.) I've lived here six and a half years now and haven't even suffered a property crime myself (can't say the same for my boyfriend, who does not live with me, though).

I didn't mean to insinuate you had to avoid the entire territory, just sketchy places, late at night, and/or engaging in poor judgment.
